Marva’s Sweet and Sour Sauce
A simple recipe for sweet and sour dishes, good with fish, veg or meat
Ingredients:
2 blended or juiced tomatoes (or 2 tablespoons ketchup for a quicker version)
2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
1/2 cup apple juice, orange juice or pineapple juice
1/4 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon cornstarch, mixed in a bit of cold juice or water
Combine the tomatoes, soy sauce, juice and vinegar, then simmer for a few minutes. Then add the cornstarch mixture, stirring as you add. Increase heat and boil in a pot, stirring contstantly to prevent sticking or burning.
**Cornstarch isn’t always gluten free, depending on the source, and some people are sensitive to cornstarch. Other gluten free versions can use rice flour, potato flour, arrowroot or tapioca instead of cornstarch, and I use limes or lemons instead of vinegar for a different flavour. For a sweeter version, add a spoonful of honey or maple syrup!
