Marva’s Sweet and Sour Sauce
A simple recipe for sweet and sour dishes, good with fish, veg or meat
Ingredients:
2 blended or juiced tomatoes (or 2 tablespoons ketchup for a quicker version)
2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
1/2 cup apple juice, orange juice or pineapple juice
1/4 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon cornstarch, mixed in a bit of cold juice or water
Combine the tomatoes, soy sauce, juice and vinegar, then simmer for a few minutes. Then add the cornstarch mixture, stirring as you add. Increase heat and boil in a pot, stirring contstantly to prevent sticking or burning.
**Cornstarch isn’t always gluten free, depending on the source, and some people are sensitive to cornstarch. Other gluten free versions can use rice flour, potato flour, arrowroot or tapioca instead of cornstarch, and I use limes or lemons instead of vinegar for a different flavour. For a sweeter version, add a spoonful of honey or maple syrup!
Alas! I have found no black beans anywhere local.. and not up to driving to Hereford or Abergavenny to widen the search, oh well.. Ratatouille will be on the menu this week!
I’ll cook Caribbean dishes mid month!
Lovely hot & mild peppers.. Lush tomatoes.. Scrumptious cucumbers & zuchini.. from Sein’s garden..
Gluten free pudding.. Fried ripe plantain.. No added sugar.. Great natural source of minerals and vitamins. I’ll be featuring plantain at Hay Market on Thursdays and at the Talgarth Festival.

So sorry that I was only able to do one day of the Talgarth Festival Market because I over did things and ended up with my legs swelling (still recovering from the knee injury and getting my strength back.. ) However, the experience did help to reinforce my ideas about how what I can do at the markets.. This week I am hoping to receive some breadfruit to roast for the Thursday market in Hay (Sept 1st), and the monthly Sunday market in Talgarth. If I can get the ingredients, I’ll be making Brazilian black bean stew or Jamaican stew peas (made with red kidney beans), both will have hot peppers but I’ll bring ground cayenne for those who like it hotter to add to their serving. And, if the ingredients are available, I’ll be making guacamole at the Talgarth’s Sunday Market, Sept 4th.
